  • Is Cod Liver Oil suitable for diabetics?

In controlled trials in NIDDM (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus – Type II) patients, the use of fish oils did not result in significant changes in plasma glucose levels. Neither was there a change in the levels of glycosylated haemoglobin, a more important measure of diabetic (or glycaemic) control. There is no scientific evidence to show that routine use of omega 3 polyunsaturate-rich fish oils contributes to the development of NIDDM directly.

It is always advisable for anyone who is being treated, with or without medication, for any illness or condition to consult his/her doctor before taking food supplements.
  • Why do both Cod Liver Oil liquid and Cod Liver Oil capsules recommend not to exceed the stated dose?

This is due to the fat soluble vitamin content of these products. Both the capsules and liquids contain at least the recommended daily allowance of Vitamins A and D.
  • How many calories does a dose of Cod Liver Oil contain? Can this be measured in weight watchers points?

10 ml Cod Liver Oil liquid provides approximately 83 calories
525 mg capsules provide approximately 5 calories
1050 mg capsules provide approximately 10 calories
Weight Watchers head office would need to be contacted to ascertain what kind of points scale they use for the above calorie contents.

  • What is the difference between products which state "Once A Day" and those which state "One A Day"?

Products which state "Once A Day" usually means that the product only needs to be taken once a day but that the once daily dose may consist of one or more tablets.

"One A Day" means that only one capsule/tablet needs to be taken per day.
  • I have been taking Seven Seas Pure Cod Liver Oil and I have heard that it helps to maintain supple joints. Is this because it is oiling my joints?

It was originally thought that Cod Liver Oil did actually act as a lubricant. However, clinical trials have discovered that it is the Omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA & DHA in Cod Liver Oil - the same ones that help maintain heart health - that help joints stay healthy.
  • I would like to increase my Omega-3 intake, but I have read that taking too much Cod Liver Oil carries a risk of overdosing on Vitamin A – is there a cod liver oil which doesn’t contain Vitamin A?

At Seven Seas we aim to continually improve our products to ensure that they meet the needs of our customers and many have expressed the wish to take their daily dose of Cod Liver Oil alongside other vitamin A containing supplements such as a multivitamin.  We have consequently taken the decision to reduce the level of vitamin A in our High Strength and Extra High Strength Cod Liver Oil products, which in all other respects will remain the same.

To make sure our customers continue to have a choice from Seven Seas our One-A-Day and Traditional liquids and capsules products will remain in their original form.

Anyone wishing to increase their intake of the Omega-3 fatty acids should look to a product in the Seven Seas High Strength or Extra High Strength Cod Liver Oil ranges.

Seven Seas achieves higher levels of Omega-3 in these products by the unique Seven Seas Pureblend™ process which uses Triomega® Fish Oils, a concentrated form of Omega-3. Every capsule and every spoonful of Seven Seas High Strength and Extra High Strength Cod Liver Oil is Triomega® enriched to provide more Omega-3 in every dose.
  • There are so many foods available now that have been enriched or fortified with Omega-3s. Are these a good way to increase Omega-3 intake?

The evidence demonstrating the enormous health value of Omega-3 coupled with the knowledge that the typical western diet is woefully deficient in these nutrients has led to a rush of new product introductions. These days you can find Omega-3 in eggs, yoghurts, milks, spreads, bread, fruit juices and more.

However, many of these Omega-3s are of the short-chain type that the body finds difficult to convert into a useful form and are often at low levels. Check the amount of Omega-3 supplied by each product, check the price, then make your decision. We think you will find it easier to take one Cod Liver Oil capsule a day then eat a healthy variety of the foods you enjoy.
  • I am a vegetarian and therefore cannot take Cod Liver Oil. Is there a vegetarian option?

The type of Omega-3 obtained from vegetable sources is Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA). In theory, the body should be able to convert this into EPA and DHA, but the process is so unreliable that scientists invariably work with Omega-3 EPA and DHA.

However, if you take a daily flaxseed (linseed) oil supplement and eat dark green leafy vegetables (walnuts too), you will be getting good levels of ALA. To help its conversion to EPA and DHA, cut down as much as possible on foods high in Omega-6 fatty acids. These include vegetable oils and spreads and many processed foods.
  • I have read that Omega-3s in oily fish, fish oils and Cod Liver Oil are good for the heart, the brain, the joints and lots of other things besides. Isn’t this too good to be true?

It does seem quite miraculous that one type of nutrient should be able to do all these things, but when you realise that the Omega-3 fatty acids are an important part of the membrane of every single cell in the human body, it begins to make sense.

Without enough Omega-3, the function of every cell is impaired to a lesser or greater degree. Until the 20th century, most people got enough Omega-3 through their everyday diet, but as farming and food production methods changed and our eating habits altered, our diet became unhealthily low in Omega-3.
  • I am worried about reports that oily fish contain high levels of toxic dioxins and PCBs. Is Cod Liver Oil safer to take or is it just as bad?

It is true that some oily fish – particularly the bigger fish - are contaminated by environmental toxins. However, you may be reassured that Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil is taken from fish caught in the cold, clear, clean waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans before undergoing a sophisticated and stringent refining process to produce oil to the Ocean Gold standard of purity. Then, every single drop of Seven Seas Pure Cod Liver Oil is checked in twenty different ways to guarantee our high quality.
  • Are the Haliborange products Nut free?

We do not add nuts or nut extract as a direct ingredient in any of the products in the Haliborange range. However, as with many children's multivitamin products, particular vitamins are suspended in vegetable oil and it is this derivative that we can not give a guarantee that it is free from nut derivatives.

Multibionta does not need to be kept refrigerated, which makes it easy and convenient to take every day.
  • Does my body really need Probiotics?

Probiotics play an important role in the health of our digestive system. Ideally a balanced diet should provide us with all the nutrients that we need. However, with today's hectic lifestyle we do not always eat what we should. We often consume processed and convenience foods, skip meals completely, alter our diets for slimming or have selective eating habits. A combination of these factors may mean that we are not getting all of the nutrients that we need.
  • Can everyone take Multibionta?

Yes, everyone over 12 years of age can take Multibionta. However, women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should consult their doctor before taking vitamin and mineral supplements. This product contains iron, which if taken to excess, may be harmful to very young children.

Some individuals reap the benefits of a Probiotic Multivitamin immediately. We would however recommend that people take a Probiotic Multivitamin supplement for a minimum of 3 months.

  • What is omega-3?

Omega-3 nutrients are polyunsaturated fatty acids known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Unfortunately we cannot produce Omega-3 in the body and therefore must obtain it from our diet.
  • Why do I need omega-3?

It is recommended that we consume Omega-3 nutrients as part of a daily diet to maintain good health. The Government advises we eat 2 portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily.
